About BCDC. The award-winning San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is a
State of California government agency located in the City of San Francisco with regulatory and planning
responsibilities over San Francisco Bay and within the Bay Area’s nine-county shoreline. BCDC is guided in its
actions by state and federal laws, policies, and regulations: the McAteer-Petris Act, Suisun Marsh Preservation
Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, San Francisco Bay Plan, and various special area plans.
The Adapting to Rising Tides (ART) intern will work with the BCDC planning team and the ART program on a
variety of issues related to the Adapting to Rising Tides, Bay Area project.
ART, Bay Area is the Bay Area’s first nine-county regional scale assessment. The project team, including those
sought for this internship, will conduct a climate assessment to evaluate the vulnerabilities and consequences
of, and develop adaptation strategies for, the Bay Area transportation network including four key asset
categories as defined through the ART process. The project seeks to illustrate the interconnected nature of
regional vulnerabilities and identify the need for a range of adaptation strategies, including physical
interventions, governance approaches and funding and financing options. Responsibilities will include:
• Aid in completion of vulnerability assessments utilizing the ART Approach to collect data and
information that will inform characterization of vulnerability and consequences for the assets, systems
of assets, sectors and services addressed in the project;
• Develop communication skills, both written and verbal participating in large collaborative processes to
address the specific challenges of building climate resilience across different communities, assets and
services, and jurisdictions and owners;
• Provide staff support for meetings of the various stakeholder groups including regional working group
and public meetings.
Employment Term. Part-Time or Full-Time, Limited Term
Salary and Benefits. Environmental Services Intern salary range is: $2,168 to $2,890/month; Benefits include
paid vacation/sick leave or annual leave.

Qualifications: Strong research, writing, organizational and analysis skills. Interdisciplinary understanding of
the climate change resilience issues (e.g. science, equity, law, ecological systems, engineering, policy, or
finance). Some GIS experience is preferred. Ability to think critically and work both independently and in a
team environment. Willingness to learn and pitch in at all levels.
Eligibility.
Either I
Equivalent to graduation from college with a major or a minor (or equivalent) in urban, regional or environmental
planning, economics, natural resource management, ecology, geography, earth or natural science, engineering,
architecture, law, or a related field.
Or II
Registration as a graduate student in a college or university of recognized standing in urban, regional or environmental
planning, economics, natural resource management, ecology, geography, earth or natural science, engineering,
architecture, law, or a related field.
Or III
Possession of a Master’s or two years of graduate work toward a Doctorate Degree in Urban, Regional or Environmental
Planning, Economics, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Geography, Earth or Natural Science, Engineering,
Architecture, Law, or a related field or possession of another advanced degree with significant graduate course work in
these fields.
Or IV
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with any major and six months of intern experience as a college
student or graduate undergoing supervised practical training comparable to Student Assistant, Graduate Student
Assistant or Environmental Services Intern in a work assignment of a professional nature related to the environmental
sciences or to planning, managing or regulating uses of land or water.
